The staff of the Jeffrey Gorodetsky Medical Practice honored him as a true example of healthy aging. In the spirit of “adding life to years” instead of simply adding years to life they cited his participation in competitive barefoot water skiing as an amazing feat (or maybe “feet”).

Al is quoted as saying he strives to “outlive his competitors” via his motto: Everybody has to grow older, but growing up is optional.

Al credits his many years of playing woodwind instruments as providing him with the endurance required in this very physical sport. Of course, eating well and exercising obviously play a vital role in Al’s healthy aging too.

Dr. Gorodetsky has been impressed with Al’s philosophy and has enjoyed learning from him and observing his positive spirit. ScoreVivo is pleased to have Al Hager as one our featured composers and arrangers.

Paul has enjoyed a long and distinguished career and is widely regarded as one of the world’s best flutists. Living in the Los Angeles area since 1985, his career includes teaching along with extensive performing and collaborating with musicians throughout the United States, China, and Japan.

We are featuring Paul’s “25 Warm Ups and Caprices.” This is his first exercise book, an outstanding collection of caprices that will benefit flutists along a comprehensive plan of study.

Their guest artists, Tadeu Coelho and Ian Clarke, were amazing as usual, along with accompanist Tim Carey.

I was thrilled that four of our ScoreVivo pieces were featured in various flute choir reading sessions and performances: Rustic Dance, A Little Joy, Corbit’s Charge, and Seventeen Come Sunday.

I am always looking for memorable introits for my ringers. Over the years, they are used to my placing them in different locations around the sanctuary, thus providing the worshipers with “surround sound.”

My plan for this piece is to station the singing bells in the back and the chimes over to the side. (This can be done with 5 ringers total.) Then 8 ringers can handle the handbell chordal sections at the tables up in the front of the sanctuary.

My hope is that everyone who purchases this piece will be creative about performing it in multiple settings. I would love to hear back from you!

Marc’s primary musical focus is in the area of jazz improvisation and composition. He has received Jazz Performance Fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. He holds a Bachelors degree in Music and Music Education from the University of the Arts, a Masters in Music degree from Temple University, and studied privately with the late Harold Bennett and with Pamela Guidetti.

About Jazz Duets for the Flute

“Jazz Duets for the Flute – Advanced Studies in Jazz Improvisation Inspired Composition” is a compilation of 10 flute duets. This is an eclectic collection of challenging and fun Jazz-inspired duets for the adventurous flutist who would like a diversion from the more established repertoire of duets available. The addition of chord changes allows for the opportunity of performance with a jazz rhythm section as an option.

This is a very well done 68-page glossy magazine just full of “flutistic” articles and photos. Evidently, there are four issues each year. The issue that appeared in my mailbox a couple of days ago is “2011-4.”

Fransje de Visser wrote the article as a description of the National Flute Association Convention that was held in Charlotte in August 2011. About one-half of her article is about me and my work as a composer/arranger and she includes four photos: one of the Raleigh Area Flute Association as we performed “Popcorn Polka” (with boomwhackers in full evidence!), and another that is my Facebook photo.

Prior to August, Fransje and I had been emailing each other; we made a point to meet each other at the convention. Someday I hope to find someone to translate all of this article’s text as written by my new friend from across the pond!

Trevor Wye

Trevor Wye is a professional flutist, flute instructor, and author of several books about technical aspects of flute playing.

Wye studied the flute privately both with Geoffrey Gilbert and Marcel Moyse. He was a freelance orchestral and chamber music player on the London scene for many years and has made several solo recordings, notably on his flute d’amour.

He was formerly a professor at the Guildhall School of Music, London and for 21 years at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Wye is the author the famous “Practice Books” for the flute, which have received world wide acclaim and have been translated into eleven other languages. More recently, his highly praised biography of Marcel Moyse was published in English and in four other languages.

Founder of the British Flute Society, he was also founder and director of International Summer School, from 1969-1988, the biggest flute summer camp in the world. He is currently working on a flute encyclopaedia called The Flute Ark.

In 1990 he was made an honorary Fellow of the Royal Northern College of Music and in 2011, was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Flute Association.

The two arrangements of his that we are featuring are “March – Seventeen Come Sunday” by composer Ralph Vaughan Williams and “Sonata Abella” by composer Johann Christoph Pezel. Both arrangements are for flute choirs.

Al received degrees from Florida State University and the University of Florida, has been a public school music teacher since 1968, was twice selected Teacher of the Year, and retired in 2009.

He maintains a private studio and performs with the Indian River Pops Orchestra, Silhouette, Flutes Renaissance, and the Indian River Brass Quintet. He serves on the board of the Ft. Pierce Jazz and Blues Society as Education and Scholarship Chairman.
