Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) was a fine organist who succeeded Cesar Franck at the Paris Conservatoire as organ professor, and later as professor of composition. Widor's approachable music was a model for his students Louis Vierne and Darius Milhaud. Edgard Varese was also a former student.
Widor's best loved piece is the final movement, Toccata from his 5th Symphony for Organ, which often was played at the close of the Christmas Mass at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
This "Andante Cantabile" arrangement for flute and piano is taken from his 4th Symphony for organ.
